Don’t Be So Daft

Occasionally the folks over at Greyscalegorilla host a Five Second Project challenge. A new theme is given each time and the goal is to create an animation that tells a story in under five seconds. This is my entry for the theme “Harder Better Faster Stronger“.

SUPER disappointed with Vimeo’s transcoding of this file. I uploaded a 5k, 10k, 20k, and even an Apple ProRes HQ file and Vimeo compressed them all to crap. Must be due to the fast motion with no frames to resolve on. Uber-bummer.

It’s grainy due to the settings in the C4D Physical Renderer since I didn’t feel like waiting a week to render 5 seconds with motion blur and reflections. C4D Physical Depth of Field was taking forEVER and added even more grain and EXPONENTIALLY increased render time, so I output a depth pass from C4D into After Effects. I tried using the built-in AE Camera Blur but wasn’t happy with the results so I installed the demo of Frischluft Lenscare for After Effects. In 30 seconds I was BLOWN AWAY at the speed and quality so much that I instantly purchased the plugin from toolfarm.com and saved a few bucks. Doing DoF in post may not be as realistic as rendering it in, but the trade off in time and the fact that I was able to change the timing and value of blur instantly without waiting another 10 hours to render was worth every penny for this plugin!

Here’s a link to a higher quality 60MB version in Apple ProRes HQ for those of you who care about quality as much as I do. It’s still not perfect, but better than what is posted on Vimeo: /Daft5sec720ProRes.mov

Bonus: A quick previz of the concept before texturing and lighting.
